Values & Norms

I’m currently working on a Criminal Justice Degree. I’m taking Sociology at a non-christian school. I wrote this and I thought to share it with ya’ll. Enjoy!

According to the Introduction to Sociology, Language is a “spoken and written set of symbols that people of a culture use to communicate with one another”. Language can be seen as a hidden code among people groups, in my personal view.  Values could count among the hidden code of people groups, as Introduction to Sociology as define it as “culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful and that serve as broad guidelines for social living”, in the simplest form it’s the laws that the people group of created and all agree upon to follow, like not stealing. Norms is another component of a people group, they aren’t laws, but they are natural expected of the people within a group to live by. One norm in Texas is holding the door open for people, while in New York City you may not do that as a Norm. Introduction to Sociology defines Norms as, “Standards of Behavior”. Food is another great component of Culture. Intro. To Sociology defines Food as, “kinds of items eaten and the way they are prepared” All these component of culture help shape our world around us. And it all starts with the family.

In the movie, “The Mule”, this men put work before family and at the end of his life he lost everything and had no family to turn to. He had one option and that was to drive drugs unknowingly to different locations. Later he found out he was delivering drugs and he wanted to stop but choose not to. Upon learning about what he was doing, didn’t stop, so he toss Norms and Values out the windows for money. The people he was working with spoke spanish, and he knew spanish, so he had to language component. Only time he was eating was in the Waffle house. In “The Rules of Sociological Method”, Emile Durkheim talks about Social fact and how the thinking, acting and feeling can cause us to do things that are not normally what we would of done before.  This old men feels like he let his family down, so he does something wrong to try make a wrong a right.

Even though “The Mule” is just another movie, it’s a true story. All around us, there are so many people in this world trying to make Right all the Wrong they have made. Some people find this Right in norms, value, maybe joining the armed force or learning a language. Personally, I think there is a God, that already solve the problem in the world, through his son Jesus, on a cross 2000 years ago. That’s my Value and Norm.

I'm just another sinner, another mess up person in this world. I know the Power of God and want everyone in this world to know the power of God to.
